MASON, OHIO: Playing his first match since the Wimbledon last month, Pete Sampras posted a quick and painless 6-2 6-4 second-round victory over fellow American Justin Gimelstob last night at the ATP Championship.

Second seed Michael Chang came back from losing a first set tiebreaker to win a second-round match 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-2 over Wayne Ferreira of South Africa in one hour, 51 minutes.
