Dalits threaten to start liberation struggle in TN

CHENNAI, August 6: The Federation of All-Dalit Organisations has warned that it will launch a "liberation struggle" in Tamil Nadu if those dalits who were arrested in the State over the past several months are not set free before August 14. The Federation submitted a memorandum to State Governor Fathima Beevi, demanding a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into what it described as the indignities perpetrated on dalits in the State. Earlier, a rally organised by the Federation through the city passed off peacefuly. Elaborate security arrangements had been made, and there was heavy deployment of police personnel along the route of the rally, in view of the tenor of speeches made earlier by some dalit leaders. The High Court had also imposed various restrictions on the rallyists.
