The Thane District Carrom Association is organising a carrom tournament for schools in the Thane Muncipal Corporation area between August 21 and 24 at the Dadoji Kondadev Stadium, Thane. The promotional event will be free of charge for students. Prizes worth Rs 35,000 and carrom boards to the schools of the winners will be given.

State Ranking TT tourney

Suburban chess tournament

Gokuldham Chess Club will hold a Chess Tournament for two days on 17th and 18th August 1997 at St. Pius College, Aarey Road, Goregaon (E). The tournament will have Under 12, U 16 and Open categories. Independence hockey on Aug 14

Independence rink hockey and the third Veteran's Hockey tournament (over-35, seven-a-side), sponsored by Pepsi and HDFC, will be held at the St Andrew's High school at Bandra on August 14 and 15.

Some top teams and prominent players of Mumbai will participate in the tournament. Mumbai Olympic gold medallists Leo Pinto (1948), Govind Perumal (152-60), IM Somaya, Merwyn Fernandes, MK Kaushik (1980) -- will be honoured.

Vijay Barve bereaved

Prabhavati Barve, mother of International billiards and snooker refree Vijay Barve passed away on Friday. She was 74.
