MUMBAI, August 12: Nitin Narwar (six points) became the sole leader when he defeated joint leader and top seed Ashish Thatte in the sixth round of the Entrants Division Chess Tournament at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen here today.

Narwar, the 13th seed, played the white side of the Frence Defence Winawer variation against Thatte, who grabbed two pawns on the 8th and 9th moves. Narwar developed his pieces and by sacrificing a knight on E file. With forceful play, Narwar brought his rooks to the centre files and add strength to his threatening queen. When mate became imminent, Thatte resigned on the 30th move.

In the second spot are Omprakash Vishwanath and Vivek Thoopal on 5.5 points. Omprakash, playing black against Vinod More, sacrificed his knight on the 32nd move and two moves later More resigned when he realised that he would lose a rook in trying to stop one of Omprakash's pawn fron queening.

Thoopal defeated Mukand Khopkar with white army in 2 knights defence game in 62 moves.

The top 15 players from this tournament will be promoted to the Senior Division on a permanent basis.

Shreshta triumphs

Mahendra Shreshtra, a radiologist from Santacruz, won the third chess tournament for medical practitioners by winning all his five round matches. The tournament was organised by the Mulund Medico Sports Club at the Mulund Gymkhana.

Last year's winner, Balkrishna Inamdar finished second while Deepak Tandel, Chandrashekar Rajpathak and Rajendra Dhamkar finished in that order.

Brijesh scores four

Brijesh Thakur scored all the four goals in St. Lawrence's 4-0 win over Anjuman Khairul Islam in the under-14 (III-L) Inter-schools Football tournament at the St. Xavier's ground, Parel today.

Tambe shocks Etambe

Third-seeded Maharashtra state champion Mahendra Tambe shocked top-seed national men's champion Nagsen Etambe in a see-saw semi-final to enter the open singles final of the first Pratapchandra Gupta Memorial District Ranking Carrom Tournament here today.Tambe won 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 to earn a meeting with former state champion Jagan Bengle in the title-contest. Bengle defeated Chakor Salve 20-25, 25-0, 25-19 in the other semi-final.

Second seed Monaz Cooper got the better of top-seeded former national women's champion Anupama Kedar 25-14, 25-18 to lift the women's singles title.

Monaz got past third seed Malti Kelkar 21-25, 25-4, 25-12 while Anupama stopped national champion Nirmala Parimi 25-12, 14-25, 25-22 in the semi-finals.

In the decider, Anupama kept her cool when she had seven coins on the board, all in difficult positions, while Nirmala had a lone one to pocket. Anupama went on to win the board with nonchalance.
