Jyothilal stuns IM Ramesh

NAGPUR, Aug 13: In a major third round upset at the BPCL FIDE Rating Chess Tournament, sixth seed IM RB Ramesh of IOC (2.5) went down to 42nd seed N Jyothilal of Kerala (3), today Third seed PDS Girinath (3) of SE Railway, playing white, tamed a poor challenge from Sashikant Kutwal while fourth seed Shanker Roy (3) of Eastern Railway beat Yeshraj Aidasani (2). At the end of the third round, 19 players with three points each shared the lead, while 23 others with 2.5 points each, were at the second spot. On the 4th table Jyothilal (white) began with the queen pawn (Catalan) opening. His rival R B Ramesh succumbed to the time pressure and in the process lost two pieces to resign on the 31 st move. Top seed T S Ravi (2) salvaged some lost pride when he beat local lad Vikrant Chole (1) in 46 moves of the King Pawn opening. Chole came out with a normal Sicilian defence but was checkmated promtly by Ravi. On the first table, Girinath (3) started with King Pawn opening which was countered by Kutwal's Sicilian defence. Girinath then outwitted his rival vide a close Sicilian defence move. Fourth seed Shankar Roy defeated Aidasani in a similar fashion. Sengupta brothers who stole the limelight for two consecutive rounds did not enjoy much today as Deep lost to VKN Solanki and Pratik was held to draw by Redkar. The LIC stalwart Anup Deshmukh stunned Mrinalini Kunte when he applied his very own style of defence. As Kunte opened with a queen pawn, Deshmukh playing with black, perplexed her with his irregular opening and mounted the pressure further. Finally Kunte gave up in 30 moves.
