Mixed fortunes for Paes, Bhupathi

NEW HAVEN, Aug 13: Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, true to form, won their doubles in straight sets, but success continued to elude the Indians in singles. After Paes' exit in the first round, it was Bhupathi's turn in the $915,000 Pilot Pen International tennis tournament, on Tuesday. In the doubles, the Indians ranked 13th in the world, and seeded sixth here, beat Nebojsa Djordjevic of Yugoslavia and Chris Haggard of South Africa in the first round 6-4, 7-5. They now meet Stephen Noteboom and Fernon Wibier for a place in the quarters. As for the singles, Bhupathi now ranked 228, did well to take to take the much-higher ranked Javier Sanchez to three sets before losing 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5.
