Team chosen awaits IHF boss' nod
Balbir Singh
CHANDIGARH, Aug 13: There was just one selector, Ajit Pal Singh, besides the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) secretary general Jothikumaran, expert B P Govinda, manager Dr Raj Kumar and chief co-ordinator Avtar Singh Kohli. And this august company felt 70 minutes of trials were enough to select the senior Indian team for the four-nation international hockey tournament for Panasonic Cup to be held in Germany from August 22 to 24. But no sooner had they come to an agreement on the composition of the side, Jothikumaran rushed to hold brief consultations with the selector, the expert and coach Pargat Singh and assistant coach C R Kumar. He said that the team would be made public after getting the approval of IHF president KPS Gill in Delhi. The 16-member squad, therefore, will be announced tomorrow (Thursday) in Delhi. Meanwhile, Jothikumaran justified that there was no need for all the selectors to be present today. Asked to elaborate, the IHF secretary general claimed, ``The 30 probables selected for the camp were chosen by all the selectors during the last National Championship in Bangalore. Once they identified the probables, one or two selectors are enough during the trials. We are trying to simplify the procedure.'' Coach Pargat Singh said `the best talent available among the probables would be selected. We are in the process of building a new team though the duration of this camp is too short.'' The likely team: Goalkeepers: Jude Menezes (Mumbai), Abmush Srivastava (Rlys). Full-backs: Anil Aldrin (Air-India), Dinesh Nayak (Tamil Nadu). Halves: S S Gill (A-I), Harpreet Singh (Punjab), Md Riaz (TN), Rahul Singh (Customs), S Thirumal Valavan (TN), Ramandeep Singh (Pun). Forwards: Sarabjit Singh (Pun), Baljit Singh Dhillon (Pun), Altaf-ur-Rehman (A-I), L Prabhakaran (TN), Gavin Fereira (Mumbai) and Edward Arahana (A-I). Coach: Pargat Singh (Punjab). Assistant coach: C R Kumar (Tamil Nadu).Manager: Dr Raj Kumar. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
