City Scape -- Dadabhai Nowroji award for Palkhiwala


Noted advocate Nani Palkhiwala has been awarded the 1997 Dadabhai Nowroji award by the Governor of Maharashtra Dr P C Alexander on Tuesday. The award is given to those who have made notable contributions to the field of education, social and economic spheres of the society. Those who had been similarly honoured in the past include J R D Tata, Dr Shivram Karanth, Dr Salim Ali, Vijay Merchant, Satyajit Ray, Dr Homi Sethna, Dr V Kurien etc.

Rs 34.85 crore draft plan for city

The Guardian Minister of Mumbai, Sudhir Joshi on Wednesday announced a Rs 34.85 crore outlay for the city in the draft plan of 1997-98. There is a reduction from last year's outlay of Rs 43 crore.

Joshi however said that the government has increased the outlay for school and technical education, milk supply, road repairs, health services, housing and welfare of the scheduled castes in the budget. Provisions have also been made for the construction of hostels for college girls in the city.

Govt assurance to Meltron workers

A three day relay hunger strike by Meltron workers ended on Wednesday with Minister for Industries Liladhar Dhake assuring workers that the State will stand guarantee for bank loans to the organisation for working capital. Similarly, the Government will help in providing salaries for the workers, and take charge of the monthly overheads. The management has also been asked to release workers' dearness allowance (DA) arrears since January 1997.
