Paes-Bhupathi move ahead

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW HAVEN, Aug 15: India's LEANDER Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi entered the third round of Pilot Pen Iternational Tennis Tournament defeating Stephan Noteboom and Fernon Wibier of Netherlands 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 here yesterday.

The sixth-seeded Indian Davis Cup duo took the first set in the tie-break before taking the second set without conceding a game.

Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov ousted Slava Dosedel in a quick baseline battle and unseeded David Wheaton won twice yesterday.

Wheaton was among a host of players who were forced to face more than one opponent under a schedule that was busier than usual to make up for time lost to Wednesday's near-washout.

Wheaton started his day by upsetting No 3 seed Mark Philippoussis 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4. Hours later he faced Marc Goellner in another long match, outlasting him 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals and survive as the lone American in the field.

Kafelnikov eliminated Dosedel 6-2, 6-3, beating him after Dosedel finished off Vincent Spadea.

Defending champion Alex O'Brien, who was a wild card when he won last year and was seeded 14th this week, was upset 7-5, 6-3 by Goellner in another match that had been suspended because of darkness. Shortly after, Goellner himself lost to Wheaton.

Nirupama loses

NEW YORK: After winning a hard fought first round match against Janet Lee of the United States 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), India's Nirupama Vaidyanathan lost meekly to Sylvia Plischke of Austria 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Bronx Tennis Classic yesterday.

In other matches Laura Golarsa of Italy, the top seed in the women's draw, and Oren Motevassel of Israel, seeded No 1 among the men, were beaten yesterday.
