Claiming to give a "clean image" to the party, Congress president Sitaram Kesri yesterday nominated former finance minister Manmohan Singh and former Kerala chief minister A K Antony to the Congress Working Committee (CWC).

The sub-continent's best-known singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died in London yesterday of a heart attack. The 49-year-old singer and composer died just before midday (4.30 pm IST) in Cromwell Hospital in London.

The working draft of the Income Tax Bill, 1997 has proposed mandatory filing of the Income Tax return by any person claiming refund of tax whether or not his income is above the general exemption limit.

Issuers knock Mumbai bourse doors for names in offer documents
Issuers will have to henceforth seek the approval of the Bombay Stock Exchange to include the latter's name in the offer document before filing the same with the Registrar of Companies. The exchange has amended its byelaws to this effect.

Capital goods firms barred from diesel desulphurisation deals
The Union ministry of petroleum has disqualified almost all domestic capital goods manufacturers from participating in the Rs 1,000- crore project for setting up diesel desulphurisation (DHDS) units for the nine refineries in India.

Reserve Bank set to clear decks for full rupee float
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is busy clearing barriers on the road to full convertibility of the rupee, senior central bankers told an annual meeting of the Forex Association of India.

Policy to clear backlog of imports in the offing
The Export Promotion Board is expected to announce its policy to clear the huge backlog of imported goods currently clogging the country's ports. This decision is likely to be finalised next month.
