Roy, Ganguly joint leaders

NAGPUR, Aug 17: Fourth seed Shanker Roy and 14th seed SS Ganguly (both West Bengal), with six and half points each, shared the top spot at the end of the seventh round of the fourth BPCL FIDE Rating Chess Tournament today.Roy defeated SS Soman of Central Excise and Ganguly outwitted his team-mate Suvarjit Saha. Ganguly defeated Saha (5.5) in 33 moves of Slav defence.On top board PDS Girinath (6) and IM NS Babu (6) agreed for a quick draw in 19 moves of Ruy Lopez exchange variation. Apart from these two, V Sarvanan, Brajesh Agrawal, Jayant Gokhale (BPCL), Rahul Shetty and S Nasir Ali (all six points) were at the second spot.Results (7th round): N Neelakanthan (5) lost to V Sarvanan (6), Brajesh Agrawal (6) bt R Balasubramanium (5), Jayant Gokhale (6) bt Hari Om Sharma (5), Rahul Shetty (6) bt SS Dave (5), Umesh Panbude (5) lost to Nasir Ali (6), TS Ravi (5) drew Pranjal Das (5), J Venkataramana (4) lost to S Kidambi (5).resu¬Ut›ôA¼Tt›57-minute win against Woodforde. Seles, Huber in final TORONTO: Monica Seles dispatched Conchita Martinez in yesterday's Du Maurier Open semifinal and she did it in style. Seles, the top seed, dropped the opening game to the Spaniard and had the late-arriving crowd in doubt. But Seles broke Martinez the next game, climbing back from a 15-40 deficit, and assumed a 5-1 lead en route to a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win. Seles will meet Germany's Anke Huber in the final. Huber advanced when Mary Joe Fernandez withdrew after the second set. Fernandes had won the opening set 6-3 but lost the second 2-6 before withdrawing.
