Sangma-Bommai rift spoiled midnight show
In aiming to relive, in Parliment on August 15, 1997, the `Tryst with Destiny' session, our modern leaders put together what was turned out a fiasco in more ways than one. Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma and Union human resource development minister S R Bommai did not see eye to eye over arrangements for the August 14 midnight session of Parliament, including the matter of including Netaji's speech along with those of Gandhiji and Nehru.

PM's UN visit vital for Security Council bid
Prime Minister I K Gujral will be attending the 52nd session of the United Nations on September 29 and 30, where he will place India's viewpoint on the expansion of the world body before its General Assembly. Gujral is said to have made clear that he will only go to Washington if a meeting with US president Clinton comes through.

Paswan and Raj Babbar to attend RJP convention
The first convention of the Rashtriya Janata Party (RJP) formed by Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela, to be held at the Indulal Yagnik Nagar on August 20, will be attended by Union railway minister Ram Vilas Paswan and film star Raj Babbar.
