Cabinet skirts petroleum price hike
The Union cabinet which met yesterday did not take up the much-talked about hike in prices of petroleum products. The meeting thus proved to be a damper for the petroleum industry. Union petroleum minister Janeshwar Mishra's absence from Delhi ruled out the possibility of the oil price hike figuring on the rather long agenda before the Cabinet.

Irani rules out Tinplate-Tisco merger
Tisco managing director J J Irani has said that Tata Iron & Steel Co has no plans to merge the loss-making Tinplate Company of India with itself. Irani, who is also the chairman of Tinplate, was reacting to a suggestion made by some shareholders at Tinplate's 78th annual general meeting.
CCFI clears Mitsubishi PTA project at Haldia
The Cabinet Committee on Foreign Investment (CCFI) has cleared several proposals including that of the Mitsubishi Corporation to set up a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) having 3.5 lakh tonne annual installed capacity at Haldia at a total cost of Rs 1,400 crore.
Motor insurance hits a bad patch
Underwriting losses in the motor insurance industry are likely to touch Rs 700 crore for 1996-97. The excess claim over premium is expected to touch a staggering Rs 700 crore compared to Rs 275 crore in 1995-96 and Rs 636 crore in 1994-95.
