Short corner -- Amarnath to lead veterans
Former Indian Test star Mohinder Amarnath will lead a 17-member Indian veterans squad in the five-match one-day series against Pakistani veterans for the Independence Trophy. According to Mukesh Nayak, chairman of the Veteran Cricket Association of India (VCAI) and Madhya Pradesh Minister of Sports, the tournament which is a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the nation's fifty years of Indepedence will be held from October 17-27. Speaking to newsmen here yesterday, Nayak disclosed that the Indian team would feature master blaster K Srikkanth, former captain Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil and Madan Lal while the Pakistani team to be led by Zaheer Abbas is expected to have in their ranks Mudassar Nazar, Javed Miandad, Abdul Aziz, Abdul Qadir, Mohsin Khan and Asif Iqbal. The matches would be played at Hyderabad (Oct 17: Lal Bahadur Stadium), Cuttack (Oct 20: Barabati Stadium), Ahmedabad ((Oct 22: Sardar Patel Stadium), Bhopal (Oct 24: BHEL/TT Nagar Stadium) and Jaipur (Oct 27: SMS Stadium) The Indian team: M Amarnath (C), SMH Kirmani (WK), D Vengsarkar, K Srikkanth, Chetan Sharma, Sandeep Patil, Madan Lal, Arshad Ayub, Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, Karsan Ghavari, Chandrakant Pandit, Suru Nayak, Ravi Shastri, Bhaskar Pillai, Raghuram Bhat and Yajuvendra Singh. Eleventh day races too cancelled Heavy rains forced the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) authorities here to cancel the eleventh day races of the Pune season at Pune today.The waterlogging of the race track had led to cancellation of the tenth day races yesterday.
