East Bengal undo Tribhuvan

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA

SILIGURI, Aug 25: Calcutta giants East Bengal overcame a lethargic start to tame Tribhuvan Club of Nepal, 3-0 in the second leg match of the Eighth Asian Cup Winners' Cup at Kanchenjunga Stadium at Siliguri, here today.

Star striker Baichung Bhutia opened the account for the last year's Federation Cup winners while Nigerian Samuel Omollo and Brazilian Hugo Garcia consolidated the tally.

In a match that had a lackluster beginning, Tribhuvan Club got the first chance to forge ahead after skipper Bashanta Gurung was brought down by Bengal keeper Kalyan Choube resulting in a penalty (39th minute). But, Adarsha Malla squandered the chance, shooting straight to the goalie.

The winners found the lead in the seventh minute of the post breather through Baichung who coolly headed home a Samatai Saiza corner.

The next goal was also quick to come (in the 16th minute) through a very clever lob of defender Samuel Omollo. An unmarked Omollo received an `against-the- run-of-play' ball from Garcia which he lobbed over an Nepalese keeper CR Chaudhury.

Ten minutes later came the final goal. This time substitute Manjit Singh centered from right to `Preto' who showed good control before putting it past the diving goal keeper.

On the other hand the Nepalese outfit showed little technique or will to win as their slips showed up both in the defence and up-front. Though international Shaila Maharajan and Dhimal displayed some occasional sparks of good game, the rest of the team looked a disjointed and defeated lot after their complete humiliation at Salt Lake.
