SA bank on pace, Pakistan on spin

RAWALPINDI, Oct 5: A charged-up South African team will go into the first Test against Pakistan, starting at the Rawalpindi cricket stadium tomorrow, with four seamers.

The venue for the first Test is not new for the visitors, having played three World Cup 1996 matches at this ground and are quite familiar with the conditions.

``I think the wicket suits us the most and we have a very good chance,'' skipper Hansie Cronje told the Associated Press after his team's net practice session at the Khan Research Laboratories ground today.

``The ball will seam and the wicket looks bouncy,'' Cronje said.

The visitors have dropped Andrew Hudson, Jonty Rhodes, left-arm spinner Paul Adams and Lance Klusener from the final eleven.

``(Adam) Bacher has done appreciably well during the last Test series against Australia, so we decided to persist with him as an opener in place of Hudson,'' team manager, KS Reddy, said.

Cronje was of the view that whether the home team keeps grass on the wicket or not, the hardness of the track will certainly suit seam bowlers.

TEAMS: SOUTH AFRICA: Gary Kirsten, Adam Bacher, Jacques Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Hansie Cronje (captain), Brian McMillan, Shaun Pollock, Dave Richardson (keeper), Pat Symcox, Allan Donald and Brett Schultz; 12th man: Jonty Rhodes

PAKISTAN (from): Saeed Anwar (captain), Ali Naqvi, Muhammed Ramzan, Salim Elahi, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul Haq, Azhar Mehmood, Muhammed Wasim, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Waqar Younis, Shahid Nazir, Muhammed Akram, Moin Khan (keeper)
