TRAI floats paper on pricing policy
ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
NEW DELHI, Nov 4: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today set the ball in motion for evolving `a dynamic pricing policy' that strives to be both rational and market-oriented, by floating a consultative paper on the subject. The TRAI Act vests the sole responsibility of fixing telecom tariff on the regulatory authority, which came into effect some months ago by means of an ordinance. The consultative paper released today, attempts to inspire a public debate, that could subsequently garner inputs for a transparent telecom pricing system by the middle of next year. The in-house paper recognises the need to continue price subsidies for certain ``social objectives.'' It suggests that costs and revenues of such services be made more transparent, so that ``alternative modes'' for funding could be explored.
