India bag nine gold medals

YUAN LIN (TAIWAN), Nov 4: India bagged nine gold, four silver and seven bronze medals and was crowned the all-round runner-up in the Asian powerlifting championships which concluded here today.

In the women's section, Sarala Shetty, Aruna Dutta and Rajeshwari won golds while K Surya Prava, Rekha Mal won silvers and K Ganga Devi, Geeta Dongre, Rumapal and Tandra Roy Choudhry won bronze medals in their respective classes.

Sarala won gold with two new Asian records in squat and deadlift. She broke the records of Sumita Laha created in 1988 at Taka Matsu city, Japan.

Aruna Dutta, who competed in the 60 kg in deadlift, won a gold with a new Asian record -- 192.5 kg. In squat, Rajeswari, who participated in 56 kg category, won gold with a new Asian record -- 182.5.
