The Vietnam victim enters UNESCO

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, Nov 5: Kim Phuc, whose photograph as a nine-year-old girl fleeing naked from the napalm bomb attack on her village shook the conscience of the international community during the Vietnam war, will be designated a goodwill ambassador of UNESCO by the organisation's director-general, Frederico Mayor, on November 10.

As a goodwill ambassador for a culture of peace, Kim will spread a message on the need for reconciliation, mutual understanding, dialogue and negotiation to replace confrontation and violence as a means of settling conflicts, UNESCO sources here said.

The photograph of Kim screaming in pain from her burns as she fled naked from the napalm attack on her village remains a vivid testament to the horrors of war even 25 years later today.

The photo by Associated Press photographer Nick Ut won a Pulitzer Prize, the highest journalism award in the United States.

Kim, now 34, spent 14 months recovering from her wounds in a Saigon hospital, where she underwent 17 transplants and other operations. She eventually went to study in Cuba and learned Spanish and English. She presently lives in Toronto, Canada, with her husband and two children.

The nomination ceremony will take place on November 10 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in the presence of delegates.
