Unveiling of Kofi's package next week

[Details] The United Nations General Assembly could adopt the first phase of a UN reform package next week after some progress was made at closed-door talks, UN diplomats said. A participant at the negotiating session of about 25 key states on Wednesday, including the main hold-out Pakistan, said delegates were ``very close'' to agreement on endorsing reforms that UN Chief Kofi Annan can implement under his own authority.

Baghdad prepares to face US aggression

[Details] United Nations envoys today resumed talks with Iraqi officials to defuse heightened tensions over Baghdad's ban on American weapons inspectors even as Iraq said it was preparing to face any military aggression by the United States. The inspections by a UN team were halted for the fourth time today after Iraqi authorities refused permission to US members of the UN Special Commission on Iraq (UNSCOM).

UN again calls for end to US curbs on Cuba

[Details] The General Assembly, for the sixth year in a row, overwhelmingly called today for an end to the US economic embargo against Cuba that Washington has imposed for more than three decades.The vote on the Cuban-sponsored resolution was 143 to three, with 17 abstentions - the biggest majority since the issue first came before the assembly in 1992.
