Varsity study on hidden criminality

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

CHENNAI, NOV 11: For the first time in the country, a criminal victimisation survey has been taken up by the Madras University to understand hidden criminality (unreported crimes).

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned a Rs three lakh project for Prof K Chockalingam, Head of the Department of Criminology, Madras University, to study unreported crimes in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi. The purpose of the survey was to supplement the official crime data records compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau. The victimisation study would be conducted through a house-to-house survey of a representative sample. The reporting behaviour (why crimes are reported and why they are not) would be presented.
