TMC treads gingerly over stand on DMK

The Jain Commission revelations have put the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) in an awkward spot with the party unable to defend the DMK or attack it for its role in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. It can either target the Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (DMK) and face the risk of losing its electoral ally or defend the DMK and stand accused of playing unprincipled politics. Understandably, TMC bigwigs have kept mum on the latest issue threatening to rock the UF government.

BJP will divide Congress to rule at Delhi, says Agnivesh

The former Haryana minister and noted social crusader Swami Agnivesh, has predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would capture power at the Centre by splitting Congress and other parties. Uttar Pradesh has given a signal to the pro-Hindu party for forming a government at the Centre and there is a strong possibility that the BJP would soon form such a government, the Arya Samaj leader said.

Surjeet for UF-Cong coordination panel

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, yesterday favoured the formation of a coordination committee comprising of Members of Parliament belonging to the United Front and the Congress to remove any scope for misunderstanding between the two parties. He simultaneously wanted the Congress to set its house in order and review its stand on communalism and corruption instead of trying to join the government at the Centre.
