Group of Ministers to draft ATR

Harish Gupta

NEW DELHI, November 18: Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral has constituted a Group of Ministers (GOM) to prepare an Action Taken Report (ATR) on the findings of the Jain Commission after he was told that tabling of the report will have far-reaching repercussions on India's relations with its neighbours.

The Union Cabinet today inconclusively discussed the proposed ATR for several hours in two sessions at the Prime Minister's Race Course Road residence. The GOM included Indrajit Gupta, Srikant Jena, Ramakant Khalap, Jaipal Reddy, Murasoli Maran and P Chidambaram among others.

The Government is disturbed by the Commission's findings on the growth of Tamil militant organisations who got support not only from all political parties in Tamil Nadu but also from the Indira and Rajiv Government. If the LTTE got arms, ammunition and funds from the Indian Government and also from successive State Governments in Tamil Nadu, there is evidence to suggest that the EROS was used to fight the LTTE when the latter refused to fall in line.

The Jain Commission report, if read in its entirety, would deal a severe blow to the Indian State and repercussions would be felt in the years to come at various international fora. While India is trying to get Pakistan declared a terrorist state for aiding and abetting terrorism in India, the report gives clear evidence to Sri Lanka and others to turn the tables on India.
