Statescape -- HC notice to Sharief in hawala case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice to former railway minister C K Jaffer Sharief on a revision petition filed by the CBI challenging his discharge from the Rs 65 crore Jain hawala case. Justice Jaspal Singh also issued notice to the four Jains -- S K Jain, N K Jain, B R Jain and J K Jain, who were the co-accused with Sharief before being discharged. The petition moved through Counsel R S Jamuar, challenged the trial court's order of October 21 and said there was evidence other than the Jain diaries against Sharief, who allegedly took Rs 15 lakh bribe from the Jains.

Largest conference centre opens

NEW DELHI: Habitat World, India's largest and most comprehensive conference centre with specialty restaurants and venues to exhibit performing and creative arts, is all set to be thrown open to the public at the capital's India Habitat Centre (IHC) on Saturday. The centre, with its two auditoria, state-of-the-art equipment, exhibition space and library, is slated to become another ``happening place'' after the India International Centre. Having a club with 57 tastefully-done guest rooms, two restaurants and two bars for the use of its 7,000 members, the centre will be managed by Old World Hospitality (OWH) Pvt Ltd on behalf of IHC after the settlement of prolonged litigation between the two.

Partial response to Rajasthan bandh

JAIPUR: The ``Rajasthan Bandh'' called by the Federation of Rajasthan Trade and Industries (FORTI) against the five per cent service tax on freight on Thursday, remained ``partial and peaceful'', official sources said here. The commodities market (mandis), foodgrain market, and wholesale businesses were shut down in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Kota, Sikar and Udaipur, the convener of the joint action committee of FORTI, Balbeer Singh Arora, told mediapersons.

Fake currency notes in circulation

LUCKNOW: Circulation of fake currency notes is on the rise in Uttar Pradesh with more than 30 such cases being reported from various districts of the state, according to police. Such notes were found circulating in as many as 25 districts during the year, according to reports compiled at the State police headquarters here. UP Director General of Police (DGP) Ram Arun has issued strict instructions to all the districts in this regard and said that the State police headquarters had already asked all the districts to send reports.
