Yamaichi on the brink of collapse, faces $23 bn dues

[Details] Yamaichi Securities one of Japan's top brokerage said it may shut its doors after 100 years in business as it faced a short-term credit crunch, shrinking business and high-profile scandals. Options for the beleaguered Yamaichi narrowed considerably after main creditor Fuji Bank said it was not in a position to take responsibility for rescuing the "Big Four" brokerage. Yamaichi said in a statement that it would make its final decision public on Monday.

Chidambaram promises more autonomy to insurance cos

[Details] Union finance Minister P Chidambaram assured that more autonomy would be granted to the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and General Insurance Corporation (GIC) in their management and operations. He pointed out that in this era of globalisation and increased competition the insurance companies should strive to design quality products and provide customer satisfaction.
