Court inquiry ordered into Sikkim violence

GANGTOK, NOV 28: A magisterial inquiry was ordered today to probe the incident of mob violence at Jorethang police station in south Sikkim following an alleged custodial death.

Two government vehicles were burnt and weapons were stolen in the incident. A vehicle was also damaged and police records set ablaze by an angry mob in protest against the alleged custodial death which took place yesterday.

Five policemen were injured in the incident. Two civilians, including a minor child, were also admitted to the STNM hospital, Gangtok. Altogether 22 persons were arrested in this connection, the Director General of Police, P C Sharma, said. Sharma, who returned from the spot during the day, told PTI that ``If anybody is found guilty in the incident after the inquiry, he will be punished.''
