Rain plays the spoilsport

Incessant drizzle after the lunch interval at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur has thrown a wet blanket over the Indian victory hopes in the second Test. With 485 first innings runs in their kitty, they are faced with a cumbersome task of bowling out the Sri Lankans twice in as many days, weather permitting.

Sampras pulls out

World number one Pete Sampras yesterday pulled out of the second singles of the Davis Cup final against Sweden suffering from a pulled calf muscle. Magnus Larsson was leading 2-1 in the third set, with the score tied at one set all, when Sampras pulled out.

Hardip powers JCT to Rovers title

Hardip Singh's goal provided a moment of colour to a drab final that brought JCT Mills (Phagwara) their first Rovers Cup football title with a 1-0 win over Churchill Brothers (Goa) at the Cooperage in Mumbai yesterday. A brilliant goal in the 23rd minute put an end to JCT's depressing record of three failures in previous finals.
