Military panel for cut in US defence budget

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE

WASHINGTON, Dec 2: A panel of military experts says the Pentagon must radically change its strategies for United States national security to adjust to new enemies in the next century, according to a report released on Monday. The report, titled ``Transforming Defence: National Security in the 21st Century,'' also advises sharply reduced military budgets, saying the Department of Defence is ``burdened by a far-flung support infrastructure that is ponderous, bureaucratic and unaffordable.''

``Our interest will be challenged in new ways. We may have to cope with new or changing regional threats,'' Philip Odeen, chairman of the National Defence Panel and a high-level defence department consultant, told a press conference here. Odeen cited the invasion of US computer networks by foreigners and the emerging threat of attacks on US cities by rogue states armed with weapons of mass destruction. ``We can expect those opposed to our interests to confront us at home and abroad,'' the report says.
