ABVP protests new format for examinations
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, December 2: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Mumbai, has taken exception to the new examination format applicable to the first year degree students of Science, Commerce and Arts, enrolled in the University of Mumbai. As per the new format, the first terminal test comprises 30 marks and the final test 70 marks. To qualify for the final exams, students must score a minimum of 6 marks (20 per cent of 30 marks), failing which they will not be allowed to take the exams. Students unable to take the first term exam because of participation in extra-curricular activities will be permitted provided they can provide the necessary recommendations from concerned authorities. They will have to answer a total of 100 marks instead of 70. Any student who is unable to appear for the final exam due to medical reasons will lose an academic year. The ABVP demanded that the condition of disallowing students who fail the first term exam from appearing for the finals should be withdrawn immediately, students' representatives must be taken into confidence and the University circular pertaining to exams should be issued at the same time to avoid undue confusion among students. Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra said he had not received any feedback from the ABVP. The Academic Council would be considering a suggestion from students on allowing them to take the final examination if they failed to appear in the exam (30 marks component) on medical grounds.
