The fall, rise and fall of Jayasuriya

Jaideep Marar

MUMBAI, Dec 4: The Sri Lankan dressing room had a worried look this evening. For, one of their super heroes Sanath Jayasuriya was struck on the head by a Javagal Srinath bouncer during the second day's play of the third Test at the Wankhede Stadium. The usually cheerful Lankans were a tensed lot as the Mauler from Matara, his head swathed in bandages, waited to go to Jaslok Hospital for a precautionary X-ray.

However, all fears were laid to rest with the X-ray report presenting an all-clear picture. ``The X-ray was okay and there is no need for worry,'' informed Alex Kontourri, the Sri Lankan physio of Australian origin.

``There is just a bruise on the portion above the right side of his temple. Had he not got out today, he would have batted tomorrow,'' he added.

The Lankan opener Jayasuriya was hit by a Srinath delivery that did not rise as much after pitching with the batsman turning away his head at the last moment. Though it took some time and medical assistance from Kontourri, the dazed Jayasuriya battled on bravely.

Jayasuriya's tenure at the crease was terminated after he went for a wild swipe against leg-spinner Anil Kumble. He ended up top-edging the bowler to the lone slip fielder Mohammad Azharuddin.

The injury to Jayasuriya upset the calculations of at least one person -- Marathi cricket writer Dwarkanath Sanzigiri.

For, Jayasuriya was to release Sanzgiri's fourth book titled Dashavataar this evening. Former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar and ex-Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Ranjit Fernando bailed the author out by gracing the occasion.
