Patel pockets Club Challenge Cup

December 7: Shailesh Patel, with a handicap of 17, picked up the Club Challenge Cup, a 36-hole competition against bogey and restricted to players with a handicap of 18 and below.

At the Bombay Presidency Golf Club course today, Patel ended with a score of of plus six, collecting plus three over the first 18 holes. On both days, he had a score of zero on the back nine.

Sumit Dutt (16) was the runner-up with plus five. He had glorious chances of levelling with Patel, failing with a three-foot putt on the 35th and duffing his chip going to the 36th. A level score would have enabled him to clinch the honours by virtue of a tie-breaker.

An impressive performer on the first day was Ashok Wadhwani (15) with a score of plus four, but his game fizzled out thereafter.

Chalke nets three

Somlands drubbed Royal Sports by five goals to one in a 4th Division Rizvi League match at the St. Andrews High School Ground today, as per a Hockey Association of Mumbai (HAM) release.

Abhijit Chalke was the star performer for Somlands, scoring three goals, while Ashish Pandey and Carl Lopes added to the tally. For the losers, Mario Andrade reduced the score.

In another 4th Division match, Rizvi Sports Club got past Irla WC by a 2-1 margin. Sheryn D'Souza and Hassan Chowdhary scored for the winners, while Jose D'Souza found the net for Irla.

Don Bosco victorious

Don Bosco Oratory beat National Youth Academic Sports (NYAS) 3-0, via tie-breaker in a Divison III league match of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) at the St Xavier's Ground, Parel, today. Ghanshyam Kanojia, Rupesh Shinde and Prabhakar Gawan scored for the winners.

Matunga Young qualified for the Division III play-off final. They beat Rogets 4-1 in the semis. Chembur English won the inaugural Super League match,against Naval Dockyards 1-0.

Jyotilal leads

Top-seed Jyotilal emerged as the sole leader after the sixth round of the Thane District Chess Selection Tournament being played at the United Sports Club, yesterday. The FIDE rated player from Dombivli, outsmarted Sagar Masurekar of Fr Agnel, Vashi to stay on top of the board with six points.

Other results: Vijay Thik bt Kaustubh Nilegaonkar; Pankaj Deval lost to Dinesh Barodiya, Sagar Sadvarte bt ES Ahmed; Omkar Kulkarni lost to Atal Ahirwar; Harshad Prabhu Desai bt Santosh Raut; Rahul Sharma bt Ashok Vaze.

First win for Rajput

Rajput XI beat Marinagar Sports Club 1-0 in a Division I league match of the Bombay Hockey Association (BHA) at the Mahindra Stadium, today.

The match winner came in the 45th minute through Gavin Vandrine. This was Rajput's first league win this season.
