Congress on verge of losing Manipur

[Details] The 35-month-old Congress ministry in Manipur, headed by Chief Minister Rishang Keishing was reduced to a minority yesterday following a split in the Congress Legislature Party. Twenty-three of the 38 Congress MLAs had formed a new party called the Manipur State Congress. The Congress had earlier lost Arunachal Pradesh to a regional outfit after a similar split in the state CLP.

Bank sticky loans rise by Rs 2,000 crore

[Details] Sticky loans - non-performing assets (NPA) - of commercial banks have increased despite the strong recovery measures initiated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and bank managers. Even though the net profits of commercial banks have shot up to Rs 4,578 crore in 1996-97 from Rs 939 crore, net NPAs of public sector banks have also gone up from Rs 18,297.5 crore to Rs 20,284.7 crore in 1996-97 nullifying the improved performance.

Karunanidhi for CBI probe

[Details] Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the three train blasts which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, killing nine and injuring over 70 persons in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Karunanidhi also issued a stern warning against those indulging in communal violence, stating that the government would not show any mercy in punishing those responsible for the blasts.
