UF to put up a common front

[Details] Declaring its resolve not to have any understanding directly or indirectly with the Congress, the United Front yesterday rejected Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's theory for a tactical alliance with the party in Uttar Pradesh to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The tactical alliance would mean that wherever the Congress was strong enough to defeat the BJP, the SP would not put up its candidate.

[Details] With polls round the corner, the Janata Dal National Council has extended invitations to political leaders who had left party to form their own outfits. The invitations have been extended to Samata Party leader George Fernandes, Lok Shakti leader Ramakrishna Hegde, former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal and former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.

Union Govt asks Bihar to set up task force on law and order

[Details] Taking a serious note of the recent spurt of violence in Bihar, the Union government yesterday issued a series of directives to the Rabri Devi government to beef up its security apparatus in the state. The measures include the re-organisation of the police and district administration in eight worst-affected districts and setting up a task force for reviewing the law and order situation on a daily basis.
