CHIANG MAI, DEC 9: It was yet another dismal day for India at the World Weightlifting Championships with its main hope Karnam Malleswari finishing fifth in the 59 kg category, dominated by Asians. Another highly rated Indian Pratima Kumari, also gave a dismal performance, managing a lift of just 77.5 kgs. She failed in her attempt in 82.5 kgs, to be placed a poor 12th. In the men's section, China's Xugang Zhan set a world record in the 70 kg class with a lift of 195.5 kg in the clean and jerk. Two-time world champion and world third ranked Malleswari started with 90 kg in snatch, and succeeded, but after that she failed to negotiate 95 kgs twice, and was out of medal contention in snatch. The gold in the snatch and total went to Indonesian Patmawati who hoisted 97.5 kgs and totalled 212.5 kg. Thai Suta Khassaraporn won the gold in the clean and jerk with an effort of 117.5 kgs, which was just 7.5 kgs short of her world record set at the Southeast Asian Games in October. After the failure in snatch, Malleswari failed to pull herself up even though her first jerk was cleared but her other two attempts with 120 kgs were nowhere near success. Her third attempt did not get the referee's approval.
