El Nino baffles experts, farmers take the brunt
Ending its period of dormancy, after Indian meteorologists had outright denied any influence on the Indian monsoon, the El Nino factor seems to have made a rejuvenated comeback baffling the country's experts. Dr G B Pant, Director, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, said that although the spells of rain cannot be described as an unusual phenomenon, one could not rule out the role of El Nino factor.

US relents on emission cuts
The US has offered to cut the US gas emissions more than originally proposed in President Bill Clinton's plan for combating global warming, negotiators reported on Tuesday. European delegates said the US team offered a 2% deeper cut than previously envisioned in the Clinton plan, which proposed reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2012.
| Jones trims damages in case against Clinton
Paula Jones reduced the damages sought in her sexual harassment lawsuit against US President Bill Clinton to $ 525,000 from $ 700,000, and officially dropped defamation claims against Clinton's co-defendant. Her revised complaint also added assertions that Clinton, as governor, gave preferential treatment to female state employees who succumbed to his sexual advances.
