Gulf nations summit to focus on relations with Islamic state

Foreign ministers of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations have endorsed the agenda for the 18th annual GCC summit conference starting in Kuwait city on Saturday. Top of the agenda for the leaders of the GCC states of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was to be regional security, focusing on Iraq and developing closer relations with Iran.

White House attempt to gag VOA

The White House was scrambling on Wednesday to defuse charges of heavy-handed meddling with the Voice of America (VOA) following high-level efforts to prevent it from airing an interview with Chinese dissident Wei Jingshen. The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that the US ambassador to China, James Sasser, called the White House December 9 out of concern that a planned VOA interview with the newly exiled dissident would damage Washington's rapprochement with Beijing.

Mir forced to abandon robot camera

The jinxed Mir space station was on Wednesday forced to abandon in space a 21st century robot camera that malfunctioned within hours of its release. The German flying camera, "Inspector", designed to make remote maintenance checks on the outer covering of a new international orbital station in the 21st century, failed to respond properly to remote commands from the Mir crew, reports from Korolyov.
