Kalyan Singh announces sops for local bodies

[Details] Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh announced sops worth over Rs 250 crore for local bodies yesterday, just five days before the polling for 39 Legislative Council seats in the State. Kalyan has earmarked 7% of the State's total income from taxes for urban local bodies and 4% for rural local bodies as per the State Planning Commission's recommendations.

[Details] An embattled Congress yesterday split in Bihar with party veterans Jagannath Mishra and Ram Lakhan Singh Yadav floating a new regional outfit Bihar Jan Congress. State Congress leadership quickly reacted by suspending Mishra and expelling Yadav from the party.

Hegde's Lok Shakti to contest 60 LS seats

[Details] Lok Shakti leader Ramakrishna Hegde yesterday called upon political parties to leave uncontested 25% seats in proportion to their respective strengths in the dissolved Lok Sabha for the freedom fighters. Hegde also announced that his party would contest three seats in Orissa and about 50 to 60 candidates in the coming elections all over the country.
