Letters to the Editor

Miracles not included

[Details] Tariq Anwar's repeated assertions that Sonia Gandhi can deliver results if she leads from the front shows that the collective Congress mind has suffered terminal calcification. He has said this is possible because "India is a very emotional nation". In other words, he has stopped short of calling the electorate a mass of idiots -- only just. Fortunately, the voter is a little smarter than the more visible faces of the Congress.

Learning from Asia

[Details] If there is one thing that the Asian crisis has proved in relation to India it is not that the Indian economy has been well and truly globalised, but quite the opposite. Many see the rupee's recently declining fortunes as being linked to this crisis. In fact, even if it triggered the fall, a weaker rupee was entirely justified by the fundamentals. The question was when, rather than if, a correction would occur.

The forgotten soldier

[Details] Spare a thought for the paratrooper in the Kashmir valley, the Jat on the glacier, the Maratha on the Line of Control (LC), grenadiers in the North East, and the gunners, sowars, fitters and signalers operating with the Rashtriya Rifles battalions. They are the only Indians being fired upon by the enemy, and returning that fire. The roll of honour is testimony to their grit, and infallibility.
