Sensex spurts by 73 pts

MUMBAI, Dec 29: Select pivotals led by Telco, Colgate, HDFC and others firmed up on theBSE today on fresh buying support by FIIs, coupled with local speculative support. The BSE Sensex gained 73 points.

The BSE Sensitive Index started on a better note at 3648.65 points, and breached the psychological barrier of 3700-mark. It touched an intra-day high of 3709.72 points before closing at 3706.79 points against its previous close of 3633.38 points.

The BSE-100 index also crossed the 1600-mark before closing at 1604.34, gaining 29.41 points over the last trading day's close of 1574.93 points.Brokers say the sentiment was boosted mainly due to start of a new account and fresh buying support extended by the FIIs in select scrips. The domestic FIs also joined the bandwagon and made purchases in several blue chip companies. ITC remained the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 154.85 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 722.02 crore. On the NSE share prices rose further on increased speculative buying by bull operators. The NSE-50 index opened better at 1061.65 and shot up to 1081.50. Later, it closed at 1079.00, showing a smart gain of 17.55 over the last close of 1061.45.The dollar NSE-50 (defty) also started firm at 939.35 and after moving in a range of 955.45 and 937.05, ended at 953.45, disclosing a gain of 14.30 from the previous close of 939.15. The Midcap index closed at 1179.00, showing a gain of 9.65 over the last close of 1169.35. The market showed a total turnover of Rs 1100.58 crore.
