Women's panel to meet parties

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) will meet various political parties beginning from Monday, demanding proportionate allocation of tickets to women in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Other demands to be raised with the political parties are that no tickets should be given to persons having criminal records and those showing disrespect to women. This exercise is being undertaken by NCW, empowered to safeguard women's rights under National Commission for Women's Act, 1990, to present the demands of women to each political party before the forthcoming elections, it said.

Set back for JD

IMPHAL: The Janata Dal in Manipur suffered a major a setback as a section of the party, under the leadership of Ngamkhai Touthang, joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal. In a statement here on Friday, Touthang said they had taken the decision on Wednesday last. He claimed that 30 councillors, seven district presidents, 221 active members joined the Manipur unit of the RJD.

TMC committee

CHENNAI: THE Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) on Friday appointed a four-member committee to hold talks with `fraternal parties' on sharing of seats for the coming Lok Sabha elections. The committee would be headed by the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly S Balakrishnan. The other members of the committee are, D Sudarsanam, A R Marimuthu and K Paramalai, all former MLAs.

BJD meet put off

BHUBANESWAR: The newly-floated Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to shift its proposed rally here from January 7 to 11, according to party spokesman, Amar Satpathy. The postponement was required to accommodate some leaders of different political parties, he said. The party had sent invitations to Samata Party chief George Fernandes, Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan, former MP Aslam Sher Khan and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde to address the gathering.ÿ
