PUNE, January 2: The Pune-based Sports Medicine Association (SMA) will organise a cycle rally from Shaniwarwada to Sancheti Hospital on January 4, which is being observed as World Cycle Day, to spread public awareness about pollution caused by excessive use of automobiles.At least 1,000 persons including some leading medical practitioners are expected to participate in the rally. The rally is being sponsored by the Cycle Dealers' Association and the manufacturers of Thums Up, said SMA president Dr Sampat Pungaliya while addressing a press conference here today. Over 150 persons have already registered their names as participants in the rally, he added.
The rally, which will start from Shaniwarwada at 8 a.m. will proceed via City Post Chowk, Laxmi Road, Bajirao Road, Abhinav Kala Vidyalaya, Tilak Road and Lakdi Pul.
The participants of the rally will also take an oath that they will use cycles instead of automobiles for a short distance travel.
Among the dignitaries scheduled to attend the rally are
Pune's Police Commissioner K K Kashyap and Mayor Vandana Chavan.
The managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic Dr. K B Grant, principal of Fergusson College V K Wagh, former Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi and social worker Shantilal Mutha were also present at the rally, Dr Pungaliya said.
