PALAKKAD, Jan 2: CPI(M) general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet has said that a loss of self-confidence was behind the media blitz the BJP had unleashed during the past few days.Addressing the press here yesterday evening, Surjeet, who arrived for the 16th State conference of the CPI(M), said the BJP would have a poor show in this election, with a reduced tally in the coming Lok Sabha. He said the Hindutva party had the support of only the ``money-bags,'' and not the common people.
Surjeet said that the realisation of the BJP about its reduced mass base was one reason why it was willing to have alliances with anyone. He said this had exposed the party's loss of confidence even as it approached the new election.
The CPI(M) leader said that the Sonia factor would not have any major impact on this election. He pointed out that Sonia Gandhi had kept aloof from politics and it was unrealistic to expect her entry into the campaign scene to change the whole political atmosphere of this vast
country.
Surjeet also ruled out any alliances or adjustments with the Congress. He asserted that neither the United Front nor the Left Front would have any understanding with the Congress.
Later in the evening, Surjeet visited veteran CPI(M) leader E M S Namboodiripad, who arrived here early in the morning.
Surjeet was given a rousing reception by the party's Red Volunteers at Chandranagar, the border of Palakkad town. Later, he inspected a guard of honour of the Red Volunteers at the Stadium Ground. CPI(M) leaders V S Achuthanandan, Chadayan Govindan, T Sivadasa Menon, T K Ramakrishnan and others were also present.y
