IES (E) topple Shardashram

Jan 2: Indian education society (IES) English entered the final of the Giles Shield Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament defeating holders Shardashram English by 23 runs on the concluding day of the two-day semi-final at New Hind ground, Matunga here on Friday. They meet Balmohan Vidyamandir, who beat Springfield-Rizvi by ten wickets yesterday at Shivaji Park, in the summit clash.

Shardashram, English, chasing a target of 262 in 75 overs, and needing another 246 runs in 71 overs with all the wickets in hand, were all out for 239 in 69 overs.

Shardashram, had a early setback when Viren Mistry was run out at overnight score of 16. The second wicket pair of Rahul Raipally (27) and Rohit Salunke (33) added 63 runs. Thereafter, they lost two quick wickets and were tottering at 80 for four.

However, the fifth wicket partnership of 79 runs between left-hander Abhishek Prabhu and Pradosh Mayekar brought the victory in sight. When the partnership was looking dangerous, off-spinner Abhishek Pawaskar induced Prabhu (23) to give a return catch.

At the other end Mayekar was going great guns as Shardashram were placed at 226 for six at the tea interval, with Mayekar one short of his well deserved century.

However, in the first over after the break, leg-spinner Rohan Amladi, took two wickets to reduce their rivals to 227 for eight. Mayekar was bowled while trying to turn on the leg side for a gritty 99 inclusive of 13 hits to the ropes.

The Shardashram innings lasted for another 12 runs and they were bowled out for 239. Sunil Gudge retires

Former Maharashtra all-rounder Sunil Gudge today retired from first class cricket in Pune citing persoanl personal reasons.

The 39-year old Gudge had played in 56 Ranji Trophy ties from 1979 to 1997 and captured 104 wickets including 28 catches and scored more than 1000 runs.Gudge was a member of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy under the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar and Anshuman Gaikwad in 1981-82 and 1987-88 respectively.

He was selected in the Indian squad (under-19) against Pakistan and England held in 1978-79 and 1981-82 respectively. An assistant manager with the State Bank of India (SBI), also played against the Sri Lankans representing Board President's XI in the 1986-87 season.

Indian Gym eye double

Indian gymkhana entered the finals of both, the mini boys and mini girls events of the Fr Agnel Open basketball tournament sponsored by McDonalds at Vashi, today.

The Gymkhana's boys beat Loyala (Pune) 58-38 (half-time 25-16) with Rohan Kumar (19 points) leading the scoring and R Sachin following with 14.Dastur replied through Ankit Desai (12) and Girish Chopda (6) but the effort fell way short. The winners now meet Ghatkopar YMCA in tomorrow's final.Indian Gymkhana's mini girls emulated their mini boys, beating Dastur 41-8 (23-5). B Reena (9) and Sejal Patani (8) scored for Indian Gymkhana. Gayatri scored four for the losers. Indian Gymkhana now take on AVS (Dombivli) for the title tomorrow.
