South Africa crawl on first day
Failed Test batsman Michael Bevan justified his recall for Australia as a specialist spinner by claiming two wickets as South Africa laboured to 197 for five in 97 overs on the first day of the second cricket Test. For the Proteas, skipper Hansie Cronje and Herschelle Gibbs hit fifties while adding 97 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.

Anand in trouble: 1st game
Viswanathan Anand and Anatoly Karpov have renewed their battle in the Slav Defence after a long time in Game One of the World Chess Championship final at Lausanne yesterday. While in the other semi-final of the ITF Future circuit tournament, fifth seeded Uzbek Dmitri Tomasevich recorded a 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2 win over second seed Lior Mor. Both now face each other in the title clash.
