Rs 2 crore seizure

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs Preventive Wing has seized smuggled goods, foreign currency and gold to the tune of over Rs two crore in the last week of December, official sources said. The biggest seizure during this period involved 191 gold bars weighing 22.262 kg and valued at Rs 93.40 lakh, they said.

These gold bars were concealed in cavities below wash basins of three toilets of Air India aircraft `Krishna Deva Raya' which had arrived from Dubai. This aircraft was scheduled to land first at Delhi, but couldn't do so due to bad weather. In another case, 200 kg of sandalwood oil, worth Rs 16 lakh, has been seized. The passenger trying to smuggle the goods to Dubai was also nabbed. During this fortnight, foreign currencies worth Rs 46.86 lakh were also seized in three separate cases. Partnership on books for blindn IN a significant shift from traditional forms of corporate sponsorship, Amway India Enterprises, the Indian arm of Amway Corporation, the Michigan-based US 7 billion dollar direct selling company, has decided to `join hands' with All-India Confederation of the Blind (AICB), to foster availability of books in Braille for blind students. The phased book production programme was inaugurated today on the 189th birth anniversary of Louis Braille.
