Postal strike

Postal employees throughout the country will observe a token one day strike on January 5 in protest the non-implementation of the Justice Talwar committee report and demand for enhancement of payscales of certain grades.

Quiz contest

Siddhivinayak

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati temple at Prabhadevi will remain closed from January 21-25 for the customary besmearing of the idol of the lord with red vermillion.

Media kits

The Xavier's Institute of Communication will release two media kits in Marathi for the training of rural non-formal educationists on January 5. Each kit comprises a trainer's manual and a video cassette and explores issues like curriculum development and teaching methodology.

Phone lines

The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited has issued a note regretting the non-functioning of telephones working with the codes 422, 432 and 431 of the Prabhadevi exchange area and those with code 494 in Worli area. Restoration work is in progress.

Applications

The Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai, has invited applications for the Varadaraja Adya award from candidates who have actively contributed to Kannada-Marathi cultural interaction. The award will be presented on February 25. Applications must reach the Sangha office at Matunga before January 31.

Award

Noted Gujarati journalist Jeetu Sompura has been adjudged the best screenplay writer for Gujarati films during 1996-97 by the Gujarat government. The Mumbai-based Sompura has bagged the award for the screenplay of Aangane Vage Rooda Dhol. This film has also received six awards in different categories. The director of the film Subhash Shah has bagged the best director award, and Naresh Kanodia the best actor award.
