Cong Govt blamed for JD split

BHUBANESWAR: The Janata Dal, CPI and CPM on Sunday alleged that split in JD had been "engineered" by the Congress Government in Orissa by "blackmailing" some of its former leaders on the 1992 hooch tragedy. Leaders of the three parties told a press conference, instead of acting on the judicial commission report into the Cuttack hooch tragedy the Government kept the "matter hanging for over two years and utilised it to break the Dal before the polls".

Uniform civil code

SHIMOGA: The BJP on Sunday reiterated its resolve to bring in a uniform civil code in the country, saying it was not anti-Muslim. Kicking off the party's election campaign in Karnataka, BJP chief L K Advani said his party, if voted to power, would pass the women's reservation bill this year itself to provide 33 per cent representation for them in Parliament and State Assemblies.

Triangular fight

AGARTALA: For the first time, a triangular contest would be seen in the February 16 assembly elections in Tripura between the ruling CPM-led Left Front, Cong-TUJS alliance and the BJP. The CPM's strength has been weakened by the absence of CM Dasaratha Deb and ex-CM Nripen Chakraborty for the campaigning.
