Waugh stays on mark with a fine century
A chanceless 100 by Mark Waugh with sterling contributions from Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting put Australia in the driver's seat in the second Test against South Africa yesterday. Against a defensive South African attack, Australia were 392 for nine in reply to the Proteas' 287 to take an invaluable 105-run lead at stumps on the third day.

Viswanathan Anand managed to pull one back from Anatoly Karpov when he drew with Anatoly Karpov in Game Three of their World Chess Championship title match with a 19-move draw at Lausanne yesterday. The fourth game of the match will be played today with Anand playing white.

Red or black, Rafter remains a winner
US Open champion Patrick Rafter and teenaged partner Annabel Ellwood got Australia off to a roaring start at the $585,000 Hopman Cup team event today as both scored opening-day victories over Swedes. Rafter defeated Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 after Ellwood's straight sets win over Asa Carlsson, whom she defeated 6-4, 6-4.

Akram to shun Pak captaincy
Fed up with the accusations of match-fixing and betting, leading all-rounder Wasim Akram has decided never to lead Pakistan's cricket team again. Akram has reportedly conveyed his decision to Majid Khan, the chief executive of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
