TN through to pre-quarters

CHENNAI, Jan 9: Former Ranji champions Tamil Nadu made it to the pre-quarterfinals of the National League when they took the first innings lead, piling up 558 for three wickets against Goa on the penultimate day of their four-day South Zone Ranji Trophy league cricket match here.The hosts, who were 248 for one yesterday, were helped by overnight not out batsmen S Ramesh and T C Vasanthkumar, who added a record 255 for the second wicket.

The other highlight was a chanceless unbeaten century by left-handed S Sriram.At close, Sriram (120) and captain S Sharath (39) were at the crease, having put on 101 for the fourth wicket. Ramesh made 182 (496m, 26x4), missing out, for the second time in a week, on a double century. He scored 187 against Kerala last week at the same venue.Vasanth Kumar, who was on 80 yesterday, made 151 (18x4, 1x6). This was Vasanth's career-best in Ranji. Sriram got to his second hundred this season, after he made 214 against Andhra.Brief scores: Goa 260 and Tamil Nadu 558-3 (S Ramesh 182, W V Raman 54, R C Vasanth Kumar 151, Sriram batting 120, S Sharath bating 39)
