January 9: Shiv kapoor of Delhi, was not at his best over the final 18 holes of the 71-hole stroke-play All-India Juniors Golf Championship at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club per-70 course here today. He had a round of 76 to finish with an aggregate of 291 which earned him the All-India title. He was six strokes clear of Chennai's Sandeep Syal, who had a card of 70, the day's best, Suleman Ali, of Delhi, was third with a round of 76 and an aggregate of 301.
With a ten-stroke lead after 54 holes Shiv Kapoor, the recent winner of the Western India title, was never under pressure, though after two birdies on the way out he went four over the 9th. This seemed to have an unsettling effect as he bogeyed the 10th, but steadied himself somewhat while dropping two more strokes and coming in birdieless on the return journey.
Sandeep Syal shot four birdies, three in a row on the back nine to be one under after the 17th. He failed however to par the 18th which would have enabled him to be the only junior to have a
sub-par round.
Ashok Kumar, of Delhi, who after 36 holes was running neck-to-neck with Shiv Kapoor, fell away with an 86 on the following day, but came into his own today with a 71, going out in 34 with three birdies. This gave him an aggregate of 301 and gained for him the Sub-Junior honours. Twenty-four strokes away was Jammu's Arshpreet Thind, with Jalandhar's Jagbir Shergill third on 327.
Singh and Ashok Kumar, with an aggregate of 876 won the BOC Inter-Zonal Championship. West, comprising Rohit Goyal, Lalit Goenka, Wilson D'Mello and Vikrant Chopra, were next with 930.
Also a comfortable winner was Ranjit Singh, of Calcutta, in the 11-12 age category. He had a round of 77 for an aggregate of 334. He is followed by Karan Talwar, of Delhi, with 349 and Arjunveer Chugh, of Delhi, with 350.
